Going for a hike? The first thing you pack are the first aid essentials. Hiking involves getting your knees rugged at times and even bug bites. All these small wounds can be catered to easily when you have got your basic stuff to aid them. Moreover, taking your bug spray along is also highly recommended.

Also, make sure you take an extra dose with you if you are on medication.

  1. Avoid Making Spontaneous Plans:

Making spontaneous plan for hiking trip can lead you to an unwelcomed mishap. I would recommend you to plan everything in advance, especially the location and the timings of departure and arrival at home. Do inform some of your family members and friends where exactly you are going and when they should expect you home in order to make it easier for them to find you in case of getting lost.

Watch out for signs of bad weather after one day before the hiking trip. If you think that the weather can go rough and the trail you have selected would go slippery in case of rain, it is better to immediately call the plan off without giving it a second thought. You can always shift the plan to the next day or next week.

Hiking is all about walking up on inclined trails. It takes a lot of energy which can lead to dehydration if you do not take enough water on the way. On an average, you must finish 1 litre water bottle every two hours. Moreover, do circle the water sources on the map where you can get the water from in case you are stuck there for a long time. Also, keep something to treat the water as well.

  1. Calmness is The Key:

Panicking only makes a situation worse than it already is. A hiker must be mentally prepared for all sorts of challenges and situations. Mental preparedness and calmness helps greatly to make the right decisions. For example, in case of getting lost, pause and take a deep breath. Bring your nerves under control and set the camp and light some signals to make it easier for your friends and family to find you. Tip: Always keep a map with you and make sure you know exactly how to read it to avoid such a situation.
